Connecting Shopify to Oryon

Oryon reads your Shopify store once a day and shows orders, gross sales, refunds and net revenue beside your advertising, social, web analytics and CRM data. Oryon only ever reads from Shopify — it asks for read access to orders and never changes anything in your store.

Before you start

An Oryon workspace and the right role

Shopify is connected from inside an existing Oryon workspace. Only a workspace owner or admin can connect, configure or disconnect a source; a member who opens Connections is sent back to the dashboard.

Your store's .myshopify.com address

The guided connection starts with your store's .myshopify.com address, which you type into Oryon before approving the connection on Shopify. One Oryon workspace connects one store.

A Shopify login that can install the Oryon app

You approve the connection on Shopify's own install screen for the Oryon app, so you need to be able to install an app on the store you want Oryon to read.

The Beta chip

The Shopify card carries a Beta chip. It does not change how you connect — the steps below are the same as for any other source.

Connect Shopify

Open Connections

In Oryon, choose Connections in the left sidebar. Shopify appears in the Revenue category of available connectors.

Choose Connect on Shopify

A Shopify dialog opens: "Enter your store's domain and approve the connection on Shopify. We then sync your orders and revenue." It has a Store domain field with the note "Enter your store's .myshopify.com address. You'll approve the connection on Shopify."

Enter the store domain and choose Continue to Shopify

Type your store's .myshopify.com address and choose Continue to Shopify. You are sent to Shopify's install screen for the Oryon app. Oryon asks for one permission, read_orders.

Approve the install

Approving returns you to Oryon with the connection in place. The banner reads "Shopify is connected." and the card shows Connected. There is no account or resource to pick: syncing starts automatically and there is nothing else to set up.

Wait for the first sync

The first sync runs in the background and asks Shopify for up to 365 days of history, read 100 orders at a time — but see the callout below on how much of it Shopify actually shares. Until the sync finishes, the Shopify source page reads "Connected — waiting for the first sync to bring in data." with a Load data button that runs the sync right away instead of waiting for the nightly run.

Shopify shares 60 days of orders

Oryon's Shopify app asks for the read_orders permission, and Shopify limits that permission to the last 60 days of orders. Older history needs the read_all_orders permission, which Oryon's app does not yet hold. The connection works, but Shopify answers a request for 365 days with 60 and reports no error when it truncates, so a chart can look complete and not be. The Shopify card therefore shows "Shopify is only sharing the last 60 days of orders for this store. Older history needs the read_all_orders permission." If you need more history, connect with an access token instead.

Connect with an access token instead

The access-token path is for stores that need more than 60 days of order history. It uses a custom app you create in your own Shopify admin rather than the Oryon app.

Create a custom app in Shopify

In your Shopify admin, open Settings, then Apps and sales channels, then Develop apps, and create a custom app with read access to orders. To keep more than 60 days of history, also grant it the read_all_orders permission. Copy the app's Admin API access token.

Open the access-token form in Oryon

In Oryon, choose Connections, then Connect on the Shopify card. Under the Store domain field, choose Connect with an access token instead; the form that opens is labelled "For stores that need more than 60 days of order history."

If the dialog instead reads "The guided Shopify connection isn't available on this deployment yet. Connect your store with an Admin API access token below.", the guided connection is not configured on that deployment and the access-token form is shown directly.

Enter the domain and the token

Fill in Store domain for the access token and Admin API token — the field's note reads "Create a custom app in Shopify (Settings → Apps) with read access to orders, then paste its Admin API access token." — and choose Connect store.

Read the confirmation

The dialog shows "Store connected" and "Your sales sync has started. Your data will appear on the dashboard shortly." Choose Done. A token-based connection has no permission list on record, so the card shows "We can't confirm this store's order history is complete. Connections made with an access token only include the last 60 days unless the app has the read_all_orders permission." — it stays even when your custom app does hold read_all_orders, because Oryon cannot verify it.

What Oryon reads

The Shopify source page shows a funnel from Orders to Average order to Refund rate to Net revenue, and the figures below.

FigureWhat it counts
OrdersOrders created that day
Gross salesThe totals of the orders created that day, including tax and shipping, after discounts
RefundsThe amount refunded that day
Net revenueGross sales minus the refunds dated that day

Refunds on their own date

An order is dated by the day it was created; a refund is dated by the day the refund itself was made, which can be a later day. A refund therefore lowers net revenue on the day it happened, not on the day of the original order.

How Shopify is read

Oryon reads orders through Shopify's GraphQL Admin API, 100 orders per page, and only reads: it never creates or changes anything in your store.

What is stored

Daily totals only — one number per metric per day. Oryon does not store orders, customers or line items, and nothing identifying a person is retained.

Keeping data current

Automatic daily sync

Oryon re-reads your store once a day and refreshes a trailing window, so a refund made after the fact corrects itself without any action from you. Shopify's tokens are long-lived, so there is nothing to renew.

Refresh now

The Shopify source page has a Refresh button in its header. It runs the sync immediately and reports "Data refreshed." If it cannot run, it says "Couldn't refresh right now. Please try again in a moment."

Choosing a period

The period picker offers Months, Quarters, Years and a Custom range. A day with no data shows a dash, not a zero.

One store per workspace

A workspace reads one store. If a store is already connected, the Shopify dialog says "Currently connected store: {id}. A new entry will replace it." — connecting another store replaces the first.

Disconnecting

Open Connections and choose Disconnect

Find the Shopify card and choose Disconnect. This removes the connection and its credential from Oryon.

Uninstall Oryon on Shopify's side, if you wish

In your Shopify admin, open Settings, then Apps and sales channels, find Oryon and choose Uninstall. Shopify then revokes the token; if the connection still exists in Oryon, the next sync fails and the card shows Reconnect required. For a store connected with an access token, delete the custom app or its token in Shopify instead.

Your history is kept

The daily totals already synced are kept, so the Shopify page keeps showing past periods and reconnecting later restores your history instead of starting over.

Troubleshooting

"Shopify is only sharing the last 60 days of orders for this store. Older history needs the read_all_orders permission."

The store was connected through the guided flow, whose read_orders permission Shopify limits to the last 60 days of orders. Nothing is wrong with the connection; older history is simply not shared. To read more than 60 days, connect with an access token from a custom app granted read_all_orders (see above).

"We can't confirm this store's order history is complete. Connections made with an access token only include the last 60 days unless the app has the read_all_orders permission."

The store was connected with an access token, and Oryon has no permission list on record for it. If your custom app was granted read_all_orders, the history is complete and the banner can be ignored; if it only has read access to orders, Shopify shares the last 60 days.

"The guided Shopify connection isn't available on this deployment yet. Connect your store with an Admin API access token below."

This deployment has no Shopify app configured, so the guided flow is not offered. Use the access-token form shown in the dialog.

A refund appears on a later day than its order

Refunds are dated by the day the refund was made, not by the day of the order. A refund on an order from last month lowers this month's net revenue.

"We couldn't finish connecting Shopify. Nothing was saved — please try again."

The connection did not complete and nothing was stored. Choose Connect on the Shopify card and try again.

The card shows Reconnect required

Shopify stopped accepting the token — for example after the Oryon app was uninstalled from the store, or the custom app or its token was deleted. Choose Reconnect and go through the connection again.
